Grandmaster Dan Anderson

I first met Dan Anderson in 2002 at an Arnis camp in Buffalo NY. He always seems to be smiling and has time to share a story of a technique. It had been a few years since I saw him last so was very glad to see him on the 2011 Modern Arnis Reunion Camp instructor list. I’m pleased to present this color version of his 2011 Master’s Portrait.

Grandmaster Datu Dieter Knüttel

I first met Datu Dieter in 2003 I believe, when he was visiting the states for a martial arts symposium put on by a local instructor. Known for his speed, Datu Dieter is high energy on the floor, pulling disarms out of seeming no where. He also runs a very professional video company, Abinico, so check them out when you can.

Here you see some basic Tapi-Tapi moves during an Arnis exhibition in Rheine/Germany in 2004. After the Tapi-Tapi you see an empty hands drill followed by a lockflow.

Grandmaster Ron Van Browning 2011

I met Grandmaster Ron Van Browning in 2009 when he was a featured instructor at a World Modern Arnis Alliance training camp in Buffalo NY. I was privileged to do a portrait of him then, one of my first 4 in fact. Grandmaster Van Browning is an expert trainer for competition fighters, and his knowledge of submission holds and locks extensive. This year he was a guest at the Modern Arnis Reunion Camp, and I again was able to do a portrait of him.

Master Rich Parsons

I met Master Rich Parsons in 2003. Rich is definitely worthy of the title “Master”. Of all the people I’ve had the pleasure to bang sticks with, Rich was one of the best at breaking things down and explaining them to me. A student of both the late Modern Arnis Grandmaster Remy Presas and Balintawak Grandmaster Ted Buot, Rich’s understanding of stick work is top notch. He is a good friend and a great instructor. Today his mission is to continue teaching and preserve the art.

Grandmaster Rick Manglinong

I first met Rick Manglinong back in 2002 at a World Modern Arnis Alliance training camp where he was a guest instructor. Billed as an expert with the double stick, Rick freely shared his skills and has become over the years a good friend. In 2007 the late Grandmaster Ernesto Presas promoted Rick to 9th degree and awarded him the title of Grandmaster in GM Presas’s Kombatan system. He holds additional ranks in Modern Arnis and Tae Kwon Do. GM Manglinong is available for private lessons in the Lake Tahoe area and seminars around the globe.

The brighter the location, the lower the ISO to use. The darker it is, the higher the ISO to use.

So, shooting outdoors use ISO 100 or 200, indoors try 400, 800 or even 1600.  You’ll capture more of the backgrounds.

So, why all the different ISO’s? Why not just use one in the middle and work around it? The higher ISO’s come with a price, grainyness or noise.  While they are more sensitive, they also add what I call a fuzziness and softness to your shot. The lower ISO’s tend to be clearer, sharper and more vibrant in their colors.

Each camera’s different, and many newer cameras have greatly improved their image quality at higher ISO’s though, so experiment and see how well yours does.
